Lalique art nouveau collectibles include a wide range of possibilities.

This was a time when Rene Lalique was mainly a creative and inspired Jeweller who based his designs mainly on naturalistic swirling creations that featured a multitude of plants and creatures - but always with his own original creative twist.

Rene Lalique

You can see Dragonflies with the body and torso of a beautiful young girl and yet with incrediblly lovely dragonfly wings or rings with Egyptian Scarab beetles that have multiple jewelled eyes.

Lalique Art Nouveau dragonfly

Nothing like these had ever been seen before and it was the friendship with Rene Lalique and Actress Sarah Bernhardt that lead to Lalique meeting Calouste Gulbenkian who became his greatest Patron.

Gulbenkian commissioned stunning necklaces, rings and other jewellery that features in many modern museums.

Rene Lalique became the most desired Jeweller in Paris and he listed nobility, actresses,Royalty of Europe among his clients.

Then came his next step... Perfume Bottles

Lalique art nouveau perfume bottle

His Friend François Spoturno ( who was later known as Coty )commisioned a range of exquisite perfume bttles and almost every fashionable woman in Paris needed right - NOW !

This lead to a rush of other perfumiers and a rapid growth of the Lalique Business.

The combination of Lalique designs and glass lead to a further huge growth of the company.

Many of these can be viewed at the Lalique Museum in Wingen sur moder in Northern France or at the Musee d'Orsay in Paris.

The best Collection of Lalique Automobile Hood Ornaments is at the Toyota Collection in Japan.

A superb collection of Rene Jules Lalique Jewellery can be viewed at the Musee Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon Portugal.

The Museum of Fine aArts is also worth visiting and has an excellent Lalique collection.

Comments are welcome when they relate to Lalique and his glass and jewellery only.

Other comments will not be accepted

Car Mascots by Rene Lalique - or are they ?
.Originally these were designed by Rene lalique in both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco Styles but read on for a suprise...
The most famous is the Victoire but there are Czech Copies of this car mascot from the original moulds around. The originals are much crisper and copy Lalique Car Mascots are often from moulds acquired during WWII and used in Czech factories to produce realistic copies.
One of the ways to tell a fake is the glass itself - modern copies have really perfect glass without inclusions = and they show no signs of wear at all - real car mascots were almost always used rather than kept in boxes and the bases underneath will always show signs of wear and attachment. Chips are commonplace on real mascots and should have been caused by flying chips.
Beware of too perfect examples as these are almost always Czech or Tawanese copies.

VICTOIRE

The Most Faked and the most desirable car mascot !

The most Expensive Car Mascot (and the most faked !)

Lalique was really famous for his Car Hood Mascots

Car Mascots by Rene Lalique.

These were designed by Rene lalique in both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco Styles.
The most famous is the Victoire but there are Czech Copies of this car mascot from the original moulds around. The originals are much crisper and are engraved signatures. The copies are with acid etched signatures.

These were either of Glass or a mixture of Bronze and Glass.
Some have been copied by other manufacturers so please ensure the Lalique Signature is on the piece.

Especially popular with collectors are the range of semi-draped or nude ladies and the Eagle Head mascots.

The VICTOIRE ( a ladies head with Flying hair streaming back) is the most sought after car mascot.

Things to look out for - chips and scratches on the glass are not unusual and are a sign sometimes of authenticity as it shows the piece probably was used on a car.
Some pieces have the bronze base removed and have been used as rather classy paperweights - they are more valuable with the base.
Some earlier models were actually also produced as paperweights too.

One of the earliest Car Mascots was Grand Libellule (a dragonfly).
Some but not all were also fitted with a light bulb in the base to make them glow at night. These look gorgeous. Some had a filter compartment so that you could change the colour that the mascot glowed.

Car mascots in coloured glass are fairly rare.
Many were actually produced as paperweights and bookends.
There was a larger market for bookends and paperweights at the time so it was only reasonable to expect Lalique to fill the deamand.

Art Nouveau is more than just a style.
Translated from French to English it means New Art .
In fact that is what the Art Nouveau movement was all about.
Unlike some styles, Art nouveau incorporated glass, silver,
stained glass, posters, furniture, jewellery,Art,Metalwork,Pottery ,bronze and other sculpture and textiles.

It was more a way othinking and designing than slavish copies of a common theme.
naturalistic themes were common but even these were transformed into
dream-like pieces with an air of fantasy and other-worldliness.
Some of the motive forces behind the movement were the leaders in their fields.
Alphonse Mucha for his Art and Posters, Klimt for his gorgeously rich
works of Art, Rene Lalique for his fantastical jewelry and exquisite glassware.
All of these are now household names and highly collectable.
Potters joined in with amazing designs as did silversmiths with curved and flowing jewelry.
RIng,Necklaces and bracelets in Art Nouveau designs became the highly desired pieces of jewelry
that any fashionable lady of the turn of the 19h Century needed to stay in fashion.
Actresses and Royalty took up the style and this filtered down to almost every European and American woman
The main difference was exactly that the designs were SO very different - very strange
and picking up hints of fairyland, mermaid, niads or nymphs were incorporated.
Before all of theses fields were very traditional and mainly unchanged for many years before.
It was the genius of these designers that altered the perception that everyday objects and Jewels did not have to be exactly as nature designed them.
Art Nouveau Fragments of Design is a post from: laliqueartnouveau.com

Lalique Jewellery .
The best collection of lalique jewellery outside of the Lalique company
Is almost certainly the collection of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
This collection includes both the collected pieces and those commissioned by
Calouste Gulbenkian himself.
The museum was given to the people of Portugal as thanks for the kindness they showed to Mr Gulbenkian

A Fascinating man, Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian was born in Istanbul and made a fortune through development of the Middle East Oil Industry.
Apart from his friendship with Lalique, he was also a close friend of the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt.

Pieces in the Collection that particularly caught my eye were :

A Valkyries Score Cover with a carved ivory Plaque in a frame of patinated silver with
stylised Poppies. This piece was exhibited in the Salon of he Society of French Artists
in 1894 and it really is exquisite.Purchased from the Artist in 1901

The Peacock Pectoral.
A stunning piece of jewellery in Gold Diamonds,Opal and enamel.
This is almost certainly one of the most magnificent pieces of Art Nouveau Jewellery
and it features a lovely peacock with deathers enamelled to show peacock colours and
cabochon opals.his Pectoral is a huge piece and really captures the very essence of the spirit of Art Nouveau.

The Female Face Pendant.
A widely known portrait of a very dreamy lady surmounted by large open poppies in the form of a hood.
The very dreamlike face in Moulded Glass is framed in patinated silver and supports a large Baroque Pearl.
There are definite signs of an inspiration from Renaissance jewellery in this lovely pendant.

Other wonderful pieces in the Calouste Gulbenkiand Foundation incluse
A rather medieval looking Chalice,
A spray of Orchids forming into a diadem,
an incredibly intricate plaque for eagles and pine as a choker,
and a Landscape comb which definitely influenced several othe artists of the time (including Daum and Galle)
It also reflected Rene Laliqes interest in Photography.

To see these and other stunning pieces for yourself,

Knowing what you are looking at is critical, and the best bet is to see as many pieces and know their value as possible before you set out to corner the market in Lalique.
Collecting Lalique Glass is a post from: laliqueartnouveau.com

Start Collecting Lalique Glass

It is easy to begin collecting Lalique glass, as it has been in constant production since the late 19th century and is still available today. Thousands of pieces and hundreds of designs and objects are available, from small perfume bottles and inexpensive items like bookmarks costing a hundred dollars (or less if you are lucky) to one of a kind lost wax castings from before Rene Lalique expanded to blown glass moulds and pressed glass techniques running in the six figure price range.
Very popular art glass subjects to collect include antique glass, antique glass perfume bottles and art deco glass vases.
Most of these are readily available at reasonable prices.
Glass chandeliers are harder to find but the best place to look is in antique markets in Paris and rural France (where they are usually less costly).
Lalique Cristal is more expensive but of high quality.
Earlier vases tend to be higher in value and lalique art deco vase examples are genuinely more modestly priced.
One of the best places to look is in the Lille (Northern France) antiques market in Early September where you will have an astonishing choice of 14 kilometers of antiques in the city streets to choose from.
Beware though - there are MANY reproductions and outright fakes there as dealers bring goods from all over Europe to sell.

Lalique is both art glass and commercial glass. Thousands of Lalique pieces are perfume bottles as Lalique made the majority of them for many years in France.

You will find Lalique in many places. You can buy new Lalique glass manufactured by Renes granddaughter at many fine department stores and online sites.

As always, when trying to authenticate a piece to add to your growing collection, it is necessary to also own and use a respected collectors guide complete with detailed pictures of marks and variations.

As anyone who watches Antiques Roadshow knows, you do not just go to antique stores and Ebay to find them, but try estate sales and flea markets, garage sales and church rummage sales.

As with something as common as Lalique glass, many current owners of pieces have no idea what they have. Keep up to date with collector groups and other like minded folks so you will know when there are fakes being circulated; often the grapevine in such a setting can save a neophyte collector from getting taken advantage of by unscrupulous dealers.

Above all, enjoy the journey. Many happy hours can be spent in pursuit of that next great find.

As with many types of glass and art deco items, color and finish determine value as much as style and size. A large piece of later frosted Lalique probably will not bring as much as, for example, an early small black floral vase.

Knowing what you are looking at is critical, and the best bet is to see as many pieces and know their value as possible before you set out to corner the market in Lalique.

Know what the most valuable colours are. You will find Laliques in ten or more colors as well as clear and frosted finish. The majority of pieces are lead glass or crystal, and will be heavier than plain glass. Realize what Lalique commonly used for decorative schemes, as he often used fish, birds, flowers, nymphs, and dragonflies.

Watch the sharpness of the cuts and angles, as the first pieces out of the mould were very much sharper in detail and angle than the last ones to be produced, and are subsequently worth more. Watch for the signature not looking quite right, as fakes are out there with pieces this collectable and valuable.

You can tell that it is being produced currently as the mark used by Marie-Claude is Lalique h France. Her father, Renes son Marc, produced pieces until his death in 1977, which were heavily influenced by Renes works. The markings for Marc LeLique will show as Lalique France. Original Rene Lalique will normally be marked as R Lalique. Markings are generally acid etched, but some are raised and molded into the piece. They can be script or block and be legitimate.

Research Lalique. There is an incredible treasure trove of information, pictures, collections in museums, and online material to be discovered by the collector. Once you have your collection in progress, enjoy it. Display it proudly in your home or office, and do not forget to insure it. Most Lalique collections grow in value nicely, and more so if you are an avid collector. Do not be the collector who spends years of loving devotion towards collecting a good number of quality pieces to lose them to theft or disaster without even being able to begin the journey again with the insurance companys funding. Good Luck!

This is where you will find the BEST SOURCES of Lalique Antiques
(Its where the Dealers go shopping !
Glass Car Mascots by Rene Lalique. These were designed by Rene lalique in both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco Styles.
The most famous is the Victoire but there are Czech Copies of this car mascot from the original moulds around.
The originals are much crisper than reproduction Lalique Car Mascots
Some were issued with glass bases and various models exist.
The Antiques Roadshow has shown the popularity of Lalique Art Glass and we have all seen examples of pieces that fetch thousands of dollars Before you rush out to buy lalique glass there are a few things you should know. Firstly there are many fake Lalique pieces to be found in antique shops and flea markets.

These mostly come from Romania and the Czech Republic (where they are sold as reproductions) You really should get a reliable Guide to Lalique Glassware (there are several available at Amazon.com) as these will give you not only the prices to pay but also ways to identify fakes and other copies.

Some Lalique pieces of the 1920s are still in production today - the Bacchantes Vase for example can be bought from Lalique at their store or from several hundred authorized Dealers and Boutiques.

These are made from the original Molds and are available in various colors. You should learn how to distinguish these from 1920s and 30s versions - subtle color changes make huge differences in price.

Rene Lalique Car Mascots are widely faked and there are ways to tell the fakes such as the originals came with a fitting to screw on to the radiator cap while modern copies have flat bases and are more suitable as paperweights.

Lalique Made hundreds of Vases together with Chandeliers and his famous Perfume Bottles.

You can start collecting Lalique fairly inexpensively with their modern range of fish and pendants but I advise you to be cautious when buying expensive pieces when you first begin collecting the more expensive pieces until you have more experience.

Artlcle by Keith Jones (C)2009

VICTOIRE
Le Lalique was probably the best known hood ornament made by
Rene Lalique. It is certainly the most desirable to collectors of Automobilia.

The best collection of Car hood Ornaments is in Japan at the Toyota Company Museum in Hakone
Many early examples were damaged through over use on poor roads so prime examples usually end up in museums.

About Art Nouveau

RIng,Necklaces and bracelets in Art CNouveau designs became the highly desired pieces of jewelry
that any fashionable lady of the turn of the 19h Century needed to stay in fashion.
